The weather is warm, spring is in the air and thoughts of an approaching summer are running wild. To celebrate, some refresh their wardrobe, some are busy with spring cleaning or planning holidays. The other half is staring at their naked skin, gawking at the idea of filling a spot with just one more tattoo before summer begins. How about something cute and trendy? This will be the topic of this post: tattoo trends. Something that pops up as the first image on Pinterest and for some reason just really speaks to you. But is it really a good idea?
More specifically, I will be talking of tattoo trends popularised by celebrities which 1. there are too many of or 2. there are too many of AND will turn ugly in a few years time. I do not aim to dictate people’s tattoo choices, but rather hope to educate. Here’s 5 very popular tattoo ideas:
1.
Flock of black birdies.
Flowing out of words, infinity signs, dandelions etc. The more, the better! This trend was started by Demi Lovato.

Infinity signs.
I might get roasted for this one since there are plenty of other symbols that are wildly popular (hearts, stars etc.). It’s just that within the last couple years, this is the one that has been making waves, and truly a little too much. Incorporated words, dates, names and feathers are often part of it. Again, too much for such a small tattoo – it fades with time and before you know it, is unintelligible. A ton of celebrities have these, including Kristen Stewart.

Detailed tattoos on fingers.
Tattooed fingers have always been a thing and won’t go anywhere, but since fingers have slightly different skin and a tiny area to work with, they can’t hold a lot of detail – simple, small symbols would be ideal. However, clients increasingly ask for designs with so much detail it would be more fitting on the forearm. It just won’t stay looking the same for long! This trend was started by Cara Delevingne. Same thing goes for the sides of fingers – that placement is even more pointless because the likelihood of it fading or healing out is very high.

White tattoos.
These look fantastic when fresh. Unfortunately with time, they quickly turn yellowish and resemble a scar. I’ve had my fair share of experience covering them up. The trend was once again started by Cara, who has a plethora of these. The most incredibly pointless of them all is a tiny white dove on the side of her finger, which has without doubt vanished by now.
5.
Long, small texts.
Out of all, in my opinion the worst of all is this one. Why? They get done by so many and are covered up just as much. For me, they’re the most difficult tattoos to cover up, even after laser surgery (once it’s twice as faded) because the general straightness of text will always show through in the new design. I don’t enjoy cover-ups in general, this might be the reason. Unfortunately many tiny texts have faded over time or leaked under the skin and are unreadable. One of the distributors of this trend is Rihanna, who has one on her collarbone.
There are no doubt people who simply don’t care if the whole world walks around with a similar tattoo or if it starts fading or leaking. If they’re happy, so am I. The motivation for this post are the clients who weren’t aware of the facts and wouldn’t have been happy with the result. It’s useful to do your research and always turn to your artist with any questions you might have.
